Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Gortys and Arkadia
(Crete, Greece)

His Eminence Metropolitan of Gortys and Arkadia, Makarios (Douloufakis), was born in Dafnes of Heraklion, Crete, Greece in 1961. His elementary and basic studies were completed in Heraklion. He earned a degree and a diploma in Byzantine Music Studies. He also studied at Theological Schools of the Universities of Belgrade and Thessalonica in 1985 from where he received his degree with “Highest Distinction.” His Eminence completed his graduate studies at the University of Sorbonne of Paris, obtaining his Master of Theology degree.
He was tonsured a Church Reader from the Archbishop of Crete, Eugene of Blessed Memory. In 1985 he was tonsured a monk in the Holy Monastery of Panagia Agkarathos from His Eminence Archbishop Timothy of Crete. That same year he was ordained as a deacon, and in 1987 he was ordained a presbyter by Archbishop Timothy. In 1992 His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew bestowed upon him the rank of “Archimandrite of the Ecumenical Throne.”
In 1990 he was named Chancellor by His Eminence Archbishop Timothy of Crete until the year 2000, when he was unanimously elected Bishop of Knossos by the Holy Eparchial Synod of the Church of Crete.
In 2001 he was elected by the Holy Eparchial Synod of the Church of Crete to serve as its Secretary. On May 26, 2005 he was unanimously elected by the Holy Eparchial Synod of the Church of Crete as the Metropolitan of Gortys and Arkadia.
